In early August 2008, the court ruled that Remote Storage DVR as proposed by Cablevision would be legal, that is, that it would not violate copyright law.

One advantage of a network DVR service is that it would allow subscribers to record 4 or more TV shows that are being broadcast simultaneously. Another plus is that consumers won't have to buy an expensive set-top box for recording video. The selection and range of available programming will likely be huge compared to the current non-network DVR services. One possible disadvantage might be that users might be forced to see a few commercials, as the centralized dvr systems could disable fast-forwarding at some points in the replay.
